  1. I applaud the bill however, did they forget the other half of it? Is there parts missing such as if you have members who are not interior firefighters etc. maybe it is written elsewhere? another part that i didn't see and this is a quote from a friend involved in BLACK SUNDAY-- "Its one thing if you carry a escape system its another thing if you know how to use it"! Should the survival class be mandatory to go along hand in hand here? what training will be required? Do you just issue the escape system and say "GOOD LUCK"??? Maybe it is posted somewhere else that I might have missed? A step in the right direction!
  2. JJB-keep in mind how many police officers are struck even if there is no fire, injurys etc. its dangerous enough for an officer just to issue a traffic ticket for a moving violation. remember all the videos that we see on those shows of officers getting wacked by passing motorists on a routine type call. overall no matter what you are out there for its a major hazard to all! add a little snow/rain it even multiplies the hazards. B safe!
  3. what happens when we all pass an MVA- Including us we rubber neck! If you don't need to shut the roadway down and you decide to keep a lane open someone needs to enforce a minimal speed limit to help protect us as we work. Too many times out on the cross county or hutch we stand there waiting to see what fool is going to lose control of their vehicle as the rubberneck and hit us. After some strong convincing and it wasn't easy our policy is now to send the truck co. to assist the engine co. with the MVA and to use the truck co. as a block. Nationwide emergency responders are hit as they are assisting others. There is no excuse for the lane that is open to still be doing 20 mph or more. If you don't feel the same way go to close calls.com and read the mishaps from throughout the nation. might change your mind. NYSP have certainly seen their share of Troopers hit at MVA's especially on rte 17. Protect your crews-shut it down or slow it down!!!
  4. In many emergency response fields you need a clean record to be hired or even be considered for the position. What are the rules in ny state? Who governs it and what guidelines are in place if you want to serve in the EMS field but your past is not clean?
  5. NYPD Highway 1 P.O. Keith Winchell has been involved in a serious MVA while on duty. He was in a pursuit and was involved in a MVA on his NYPD Motorcycle. For those of you who don't know him Keith was an active Firefighter with the Stewart AFB FD in Newburgh, NY Always smiling and having fun! hang in there Keith, your brothers from Stewart AFB FD.
  6. Georgia_Firefighter_Badly_Burned_in_Blaze___Firehouse_com_News.htmThis is the 3rd incident this year that I have heard about, firefighters going through the floors not realizing the structure has a well involved fire in the basement. In the other 2 cases both firefighters were killed. Hopefully the firefighter here will fully recover. As I open this i can say that these days most depts now have Thermal Imaging units. They are an asset to the fire service and have come down big time in price. Originally they were up around 35k and now you can get one for 1/2 the price and they are smaller and more advanced units. The first line in needs a TIC. By having the TIC you can scan above/IFO/Ground level to see if you have a fire in the area above you,in front of you and in this case below you. I am sure many of you can add to this so i'll end it here. the article is in firehouse about a firefighter going through the floor, tried to attach it.
  7. IF anyone can access the ny times there is an article about firefighters who have died and family members being denied the federal death benefits,it pertains to all of us!!! i have problems getting other info to put on here, hudson

  9. The westchester co firefighters stress deb team is available 24/7. they are there for "ALL" fire/ems related incidents and if i get the chance I will give more info as far as contact #s.
  10. I guess at this point I have to agree with the vulcans, yes I don't live in the city and maybe anyone who doesn't live in the city should not ever be promoted to any officer rank, in fact for those vulcan members who live outside of the city first thing tomorrow put your lieutenants badges and the new president of the vulcans put your captains badge on the chiefs desk tomorrow because you are going against what you believe in! oh, this makes it not right for the#5 person on the new list who is a vulcan and in the chain of command for the vulcans not eligible to be promoted to lieutenant! what a shame because the #5 guy busted his butt in the books working hard to do well on the test. man am I getting confused on what the vulcan decree really is in place for and what the vulcans really stand for. a member of the vulcans is stabbing these guys in the back also with his own opinions. THATS BROTHERHOOD AT ITS BEST!!!!
  11. they will remain the same.even if the PA came in the mission at SANG is the C-5A AND C-130's.

  15. ''ONE MORE FOR THE MOON''!
  16. this is criminal , for these guys throughout nys that work as firefighters for DMNA. They have required training that has strict guidelines, mandatory qualifications pertaining to the fire service both for structural/ARFF firefighting. They fall under the umbrella of CSEA. Again they got the shaft! From being involved at STEWART ANG BASE these guys have alot to deal with. Along with the main mission of the C5-A they provide fire/ems for all commercial aircraft arriving or departing the airfield. Stewart FD is a very active department these days in the Orange Co. mutual aid plan.A fast engine is sent from SFD into the city of newburgh on a regular basis. The surrounding fire districts around the airport rely on them often as well. Between the use of the water tanker,ARFF apparatus thet are an asset to any fire department requesting assistance. Something stinks here and it needs to be addressed.
  17. I would tell you more but its top secret and I might have to-never mind! don't want to be labeled as a bad guy!!!
  18. here's the scoop-the 11th hour claim that the vulcans put into the city of MV was a good block,it went to the MV law dept 7/6/07, on 7/9/07 the MV civil service board was given the green light to activate the new list effective on 7/10/07.at the meeting the representative from the law dept. stated that they(law dept) had not done any research or investigation into the claim that the vulcans put in (what a surprise!). oh well, you win some and you lose some, SEE YOU IN COURT!!!
  19. I heard from a good source that officer ***** ate the legs!!!! lol
  20. capt-some depts have 2 members stand IFO the structure as fast team members with no training, tools etc. in other words a smoke screen just to cover their butt! smoke screen will disapate when someone gets hurt or killed. b safe!
  21. The Captain had a good trainer !!!
  22. good post seth, from being a former dispatcher there myself the place has grown from 1 phone to answer to many. there is always room for improvement, keep up the good work! jjc #609
  23. a pumper can be bought off the floor at a show for about $340k and can be used in any dept here in westchester. as long as the water flows it will serve the taxpayers. come on- its not like fires are burning every minute here. even the bussiest depts can put a no frills engine in service and get their $$$ worth. alot of overkill and useless spending.
