  1. As of last night FDMV has had 46 working fires, 11 in the past 2 weeks, this doesn't count the quick knockdowns. As many of us have been thinking with the economy, price of fuel etc fires will be a problem everywhere. Word has it that there is approx 600 foreclosures within the city. Be safe! *YOU SHOULD SEE THE NEW NFPA DUCT TAPE THAT MIGHT BE AVAILABLE SOON! LOL

  5. Already in the month of Nov several multiple alarm fires have occured throughout the NY Metro area,Even a Firehouse burnt down in NY. 80Eng/23 Trk had a fire last night had a working fire in their quarters. 2 Working fires in MV in 4 nights,is this a sign of what is in store for us this winter? The economy, foreclosures, etc - does this already come into play? Think Fire because the season is here and be safe!
  6. Its cold now and yes the Fires have been happening, Over the weekend In MV the incoming crews found a 2 1/2 story 3 family house. Heavy fire in the basement with extension vertically. With the obvious signs of a basement fire (blowing out upon arrival) the IC ordered that nobody goes in. The 1st due truck co. from the front porch determined that the floor in the entrance to the house was indeed burnt away. As mentioned before on many posts from many of us it is a priority to recognize a basement fire, review basement fires. Use the TIC to help identify high heat on the main floor. This could have been a bad situation but because of the fact that crews and the IC were aware of the involved basement fire word was sent out not to enter. Most of the fires in dwellings in MV are in older type balloon construction homes. In northern areas of the ny metro area many of the newer constructed buildings are light weight construction and will burn quicker and fail quicker. Know your construction in your community! Be Safe.

  10. In most Vol depts they have a chief and 2-3 asst Chiefs,in the absence of the capt or lieuts to work inside assigning the jr a/c is fine inside, when you have the jr officers inside the other Chiefs IMO should be outside assisting the Chief by either covering a sector of the bldg or assigned a task such as a safety officer, water supply officer etc. Stay outside and command where it is needed. * Not to mention-these days with limited manpower the average dwelling fire between fast teams, manpower from other depts requested,"fast teams put to work" another team called to replace the 1st team you might have 9-12 chiefs on the scene after all the requests hae been filled. Assign them to be your eyes n ears etc.
  11. Good thought but we will never see it! IMO. jjc
  12. UPDATE: No decision has been made at this point, hopefully soon with results in the favor of the "New Haven 20"

  18. Capt-does it even matter anymore? Obvious that the "No Tolerance Rule" has the " No merit Rule" so I guess its time to carry on!
  19. Great clip to show the hazards of floor I joists,in the past we have all been aware of truss roofs, watch this video and keep this in mind as you enter the fire floor-remember to bring the TIC!
  20. Upon arrival it was evident that a working fire was in the basement with extension already to the 1st floor,2nd floor and yes the attic.A balloon frame house that we are all familiar with. At no point in time was the fire declared under control until later when it was under control. It was obvious from the get go where this fire was going. The crews involved busted butt and the mutual aid companys certainly helped saved both exposures that were in close proximity to the original fire building. * On another note- as i have been posting on here recently about the importance of identifying a basement fire interior crews did actually find a hole burn't through the 1st floor upon entry. The TIC was being used as the 1st due engine crews made their way into the basement using the interior stairs. The experience of the member from the 1st due truck co. (ooops-only MV truck Co.) helped all on the floor above the fire to be aware of possible holes in the flooring and was communicated to all via portable radio. This is key because the info was relayed to all especially the IC who at that point pulled the crews out> This was an old wood frame house not a floor truss constructed building. Be safe!
  21. A few years ago in a report issued I believe in Washington DC after a LODD the report stated that the Battalion Aide is an important roll to the IC. If the BAttalion Chief has a good aide and the aide position is properly utilized the aide can keep the IC free to concentrate 100 % on the incident. The Ic does not have to worry about communicating non essential info that can handled by the aide and given to the IC . There are many benefits that I am sure others can mention.
