  1. Wow-great news, just like when the grants were announced for 4 generators for the firehouses and the mobile cascade unit for FDMV!
  2. Congrats NH20- thumbs up to them for standing up and winning a long overdue fight! jjc
  3. got this sent to me last nt,interesting facts,thanks-we will know more today at 10am,jjc
  4. Barry- if this all goes through, how will it effect other depts that are city run? A dept who still runs with 2 man engine companys with one of the heaviest workloads in the county? A dept who last yr responded to approx 4000 runs with 50+ working fires? A dept who still just sqeaks by when it comes to a 1 room contents fire. Maybe the adminstration should be looking to change the dept to a fire district ? In my 21 yrs there no mayor has thought to try to increase the manpower from 144 / the powers to be, Fire commissioner Chief have tried but its a dead end and its stops at city hall. If a change is made to a fire district how much different can it be? Do you charge each home a certain amount? Commercial structures ? etc. As I post this I wonder who has the biggest fire district in NYS? Are there any citys in NYS that are fire districts?
  5. "Active List"??? lets worry about interior qualified! The numbers mike do make things look good, however when an incident does happen what is the numbers of the interior firefighters, don't get me wrong there is a job for everyone on the fireground but the priority is interior.
  6. Amazing- where is all the media about the passing of Farrah? I had that poster of her on my refrigerator in my dorm (USAF) - a great loss ! MJ_yes talented as hell but weird as hell! RIP both FF & MJ !
  7. A sad day for both the FD/PD back then!
  8. With the end of the Supreme Courts session for the first half of the year the ruling on the case should be out anyday now.The publicity this case has recieved has been great for the Firefighters/Fire officers who were denied promotions because of race. Some experts feel that the higher court will rule in favor of the NH20 but like anything else you won't know until the official word is out! Good luck NH20-you deserve your promotions! * Decision should be announced Monday, June 29th.
  9. With the situation in North Korea intensifying the test of this administration may be right around the corner. With troops on alert with missile defense systems in Hawaii and the USN Mcain following a ship with possible nukes it should be an interesting situation brewing! Time will tell.
  10. You can soon add an additional $30K for the emissions required on trucks.
  11. JAG-A great resource to use if you have a question about civilian employment while serving your country,My JAG advised me exactly what to do, I followed their lead and they know the laws better than many!
  12. Many buildings do not have parapit walls, when you get to the roof via, ladders, fire escapes or interior stairs use caution when walking around up there, i know 2 buildings in my 1st due area that when you exit the bulkhead door you can take about 5 steps toward the front of the structure and bang-down you go! Basic rule- can't see you crawl! Be safe!
  13. How about-promote when there is an opening, promote leaving the racism out of it,promote even though the city attorney didn't investigate a forged letter with no merit that the mayor ordered a complete investigation to be done- lol, sorry just had to vent a bit!!! The truth will be out in the end!
  14. The one of three rule in civil service was designed to give a municipality the option to "skip" a candidate who may not qualify for the position, not to be used as a excuse to hire/promote for political payback or for race. Often a problem in a dept that I am associated with that will be addressed in time. The correct way to do things may be to go down the list in order, eliminates problems between the troops and keeps morale where it should be. A rule often overlooked "If a candidate is willing to be appointed to the vacant position there is no reason to canvass the list", WOW- just had a flashback! lol * As far a being in shape- isn't round a shape? lol
  15. The age cutoff is different all over the place, some places may have a cutoff of 29,some don't have age stipulations because of certain reasons like decrees etc. I have a friend that did 20 in the USAF as a law enforcement officer, He got out at 38 yrs old and went to work as a cop, even if he did 20 in the PD he still is fairly young at 58 when he retires from there. Like anything else out there it at times appears to me to be the luck of the draw. I know that I dont want to be doing what I do now at 62 yrs old. Yes,it is a young mans job but many of us stay because of the love for the job. Our 1 time Gov. should be worrying about alot of other places to cut rather that the PD/FD pensions. This state has alot of other places to save money especially our local taxes, schools to be more specific!
  16. After an investigation it has been determined that the letter submitted by the Vulcan Society of Westchester in July 07 to halt the promotions of 2 firefighters was forged. The signature of the president of the Vulcans at the time was forged! The investigation is continuing as to what fire official from FDMV forged the document.
  17. Tonight on the Hannity Show Fox News a discussion will take place about the New Haven 20.In case you are not aware of the NH20 they are 20 firefighters who were denied a promotion because they are not a minority. The case will be in supreme court on 4/22. I am sure Sean Hannity will have alot to say! Good Luck NH20---For more info on this go to New haven 20.com I was in New Haven, Connecticut yesterday interviewing firefighters and gathering information about a reverse discrimination lawsuit. 20 firefighters (19 white and 1 Hispanic) are suing the city, saying they are not getting promotions because of their skin color. It all started in 2003 when they took an exam hoping to score well and become eligible for lieutenant and captain positions. Turns out, the tests were thrown out because no minorities scored in the high brackets. The defense attorney says the city feared being caught in a civil-rights lawsuit. But, those who received high scores on the exam claim they were wrongfully denied promotions because of their race. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear the lawsuit, which could become a landmark case. I interviewed 4 of the firefighters suing the city and their attorney. You'll also hear why this could become a long-term, political headache for the Obama administration. Watch "Hannity" at 9 PM ET TONIGHT! 9PM
  18. 60% of her decisions have been overturned? Hellllllo Mr President- I am sure that many other candidates out there have a better record! It is an interesting situation that will send a strong message to the nation if she is confirmed! Her decision on the NH 20 certainly has and will be an issue. The ruling should be out on Jun 22, keep your fingers crossed!
  19. Its a good thing that the case was heard prior to the administrations "new pick", It still might be close for the NH20 but I still feel that they will prevail and set a precedent for the future in all career fields.
  20. See any Stripers out there?
  21. On memorial day the flag should be lowered to half staff from sunrise to 12 noon, mon may 25. * A reminder to our veterans out there, a law was passed a few years ago that a vet can salute the flag when out of uniform, this is so a vet can be identified in a crowd and be recognized for his service to our country.
  22. Again members of the Fire Service encountered a natural gas explosion as they investigated a smell of gas. Over the years many incidents are reminders of the hazards when dealing with gas leaks and often the local Con Ed Emergency responders being Matty Palmer and Jim Feeney preach to us the hazards as emergency responders. The video's are out there of the Maryland incident yesterday. If somebody can post them it would be a great training clip. Recently FDNY had a gas leak that rocked the neighborhood, last year right here in westchester county the Scarsdale FD responded to a leak with a private dwelling which actually found an ignition source and exploded ,extensive damage to the structure as well as a heavy fire condition. Croton- broken gas line to a dwelling with fire. Be safe out there and don't take these calls lightly! *There is a post on this already, check it out !
  23. NWFD Medic- Between Friday night and Sat morning alot of crews went through the evolutions with the Kellogg simulator, on each burn there was approx 15 firefighters per evolution, On fri nt almost 80 firefighters went through the drill, Sat morning was also a busy morning for the crews. As far as the best hands on yes, I am sure the Fed Ex experience was the best hands on training possible. We all know that drills are drills and only some things can be as real as possible. If there is anything that you or whoever you spoke to has some input to make things run more smoothly or if you have any other ideas for the drill please let us know, input certainly helps when these drills are in the planning stages. Thanks, Hudson
  24. Did you guys eat all the food? lol
