Can somebody define how we as firefighters should fight fires "the same way on the south side that we do on the northside"? A statement made recently to us hard working dedicated MV firefighters! As far as I am concerned a fire is fought the same way all the time, I looked in the Delmar textbook and could not find the difference between northside and southside firefighting???

Thats the biggest "SKIP" so far in my career! Consistant they are. According to the new Chief, "he took a class to learn how to run the FD". Hats off to him, if he can straighten the place out he is my hero!

Must be celebrating fire prevention week early! Keep Low NBFD members!

Damned if you do,damned if you don't! There is no way i could put a PFD on and then put on an air pack. Do you put it on under your turnout? over the turnout? Air pack on top of it all/ interesting to see how it should be done.

Great topic with a storyline. The importance of foam can't be stressed enough here. Besides a quick knockdown(fiberglass, plastics, oils etc) the foam will provide a blanket in case the fuel tank does rupture or leak. Don't underestimate the size of the boat thinking that it may only have 1 -6 gallon container of gasoline because it is powered by 1 outboard motor. My own boat is 21' and it has a 105 gal fuel tank below the floor. From a recent incident that i was involved with, heavy fire condition on a 30' boat with exposure problems because of 15-20 knot winds 3 boats were involved within minutes. Secure the vessel with additional lines, (ropes) in this case the 4 lines securing the boat on the exp 4 side of the original boat on fire burnt away and the flaming vessel headed to the next dock with other boats. It got caught on the boat well where the boats are lowered into the water with a lift. Lessons learned? Yes- i am sure more can be added to this topic. In prime time summer as you arrive at the boat club take notice of the amout of vehicles are around, many of the boaters live on these boats throughout the summer and I know for a fact many have kids on board. This can be a real problem for all involved! B Safe, Hudson.

The decision from the Supreme Court on the New Haven 20 case!
-
55? wow- happy birthday Hap! 25 or 26 years at control?

UPDATE AS OF 26 August 09- At this point we have submitted a motion for a summary judgement to the federal court in White Plains. Because of the New Haven decision from the Supreme Court stating that you can't hold back a group of people in fear of a lawsuit from another group of people. In Carroll VS Mount Vernon the city atty replied to the EEOC stating that Mount Vernon "was in no rush to promote 2 caucasions to the rank of Lt. in fear of litagation from the Vulcan Society of Westchester". This statement from MV lead Council made the case identical to the NH20 case. At this point it is a sit and wait game to see how things will go. I will try to post the article from the journal news printed today 8/26. Thanks again for the support! jjc * If someone can upload the article from lohud it would be appreciated! jjc

In a recent news release from the County Of Westchester 95 new buses in the fleet of Bee Line buses will be Hybrid type buses. As we all concern ourselves with MVA/MV Fires I am sure that these buses will add additional concerns as firefighters. I am sure that before the full fleet is on the road we might be able to spread the word on here as well as maybe getting a training session similar to the session that they gave yrs ago with the stretch or accordian buses.

Anthony- we talking about a bus or a C5-A at Stewart? lol Thanks for the info- I am also told that the persons in authority are looking into future training.

In a recent MVA/ Robbery attempt a taxi driver crashed into a store front church (1 of 400+ churches in MV) and caused damage to the structure roll down gate.It sounds like MVPD wanted to make sure the structure was ok and still sound. Inside the storefront church with the rolldown gates padlocked with american locks the PD located up to 5 persons to include a child inside. The church had sleeping arrangements as well as some type of cooking units present. In a situation such as this if a fire happened the egress of the people inside was secured by the roll down gates. I am not sure if the rear of the structure had available exits or not but the point here is to expect the worst or again the unexpected. Know your district both during operating hours as well as after hours. news 12 had recent coverage on this, jjc

PCFD- will there be a change when the Greenwich station opens near the airfield as far as response assignments?
-
Manning at airports- It does amaze me that at airports accross the USA there may be as little as 3 persons working, the objective yes is to apply firefighting agent to the aircraft if a crash does occur but IMO to rely on off site units to respond for rescue it will often be too late depending on the incident. In the mishap in Sioux City IA the Dc 10 that went down did call an in flight emergency well before they crash landed whick allowed the Sioux City FD to stage in safe area's waiting for it to land. The primary FD response was an air guard unit with manpower and ems from the city. In the event of a crash at Westchester the mutual aid plan is set up and hopefully will not needed.

Airport operations personel operate the CFR rigs, they are all trained as ARFF firefighters and respond as needed. The mutual aid plan is in place to assist in the event of an aircraft incident. From my experience teaching the ARFF class the airport ops people know the airfield and the aircraft better than anyone. They are required to train no different than structural firefighters. The ARFFrigs are fairly new and up to date and ready for responses daily. The whole concept there is to knock the fire down and create a rescue path for firefighters to gain access to the aircraft and for egress of victims. Water supply is set up for the mutual aid companys coming in as set up in the mutual aid plan.

May the familys involved rest in peace and the all emergency responders involved seek assistance from this tragic incident. Help is available if needed.

Sure- real funny guys, besides firefighting , according to statistics from "HotDog Life Magazine" and from the IAFFD assoc. (International Association Frankfurters Distributors) many hot dog vendors are hurt on the job. Various injurys occur often to include burns, cuts, tong elbow, shoulder injurys from waving all day and paper cuts from handling cash. From my experience gas explosions often do occur. Lets not joke about other tradesmans mishaps! lol

monday- when the New Haven decision was made public the City of Memphis Tenn folded and decided to promote the police officers that were held back because of race. Tuesday- The City of Philadelphia decided to terminate the lawsuit of 5 firefighters denied promotion, the 5 members will recieve the promotions much deserved along with back pay due to them. Next? We will see how many more suits will resolved.
