Not to raise any eyebrows or suspicions or anything, but...ahem...does this include parking tickets?

This is an interesting topic, and I do hope it results in increased safety. Currently, all FDNY HT's transmit a data burst at the beginning of each transmission, which when properly decoded, indicate type of company, unit number, and riding position. The decoded info can be displayed on any MDC-1200 decoding device, such as an MDT or XTS HT with an LCD display. As somewhat of a radio guy, I will say that the caveat is that a radio is only as good as it is programmed. MDC encoding and protocol is an enormous task, and my hope is that the transition to names being displayed when a radio keys up goes well. Think about how many different members may use a particular radio. Also, even though the HTs may go to 5 watts for an emergency transmission, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will be received or step on another radio that is transmitting 2W at the same time.

A few shots from the north side of the fire building. Heard the sirens and saw the plume, but had to go to a stupid meeting. I cut it short, grabbed the work camera, and took a few shots. I had just eaten at Coyote Flaco a few doors up before the alarm went out.

And don't call it Hubba's!! That's the "rear" entrance of Hubba's/Texas Lunch that's visible (for those of us folks that consider Main Street the main drag). This photo looks like it was taken looking east from the train tracks. Saw the old E59 parked in front of HQ at lunch today. I should get some photos while she's still around. Watched it working its way south on Abendroth by the Willet House around noon today. Wanted to get up close to get a few shots, but the lunch crowd redirected me to Misti's on North Main. What kind of engine does it have? Also, kudos to PoCho for doing a way better job of snow removal than NYC.

Almost made it to this one - woke up to the 2nd being transmitted for fire out all sides - then fell back asleep while deciding whether to go or not (lousy buff). I did manage to hit the record button, so audio to follow.

Where and when was that tin house? Looks like the east side of South Main Street just north of Purdy Street. I see One Gateway Plaza on the left (hey! I can see my office from here!) and possibly South Port Mews behind. Photo facing West? This is now the Stop and Shop/Waterfront parking lot, if my bearings are correct.

I have to dig around for my shots of Schenectady FD from back in 2002 when I was up there. I actually worked on State street (just west of Station 2 - technically Scotia) for a bit. I briefly worked for an outfit called Super Steel Schenectady, which refurbed Amtrak trains. My photos of SFD are probably in with my shots of me attempting to park a locomotive. Anyway, glad they're getting some new rigs.

Yes it was! I smelled it (smoke was being sucked into the building's ventilation system on the roof), looked outside and saw the haze, went to the other side of the building and saw fire blowtorching out the attic. I grabbed the lousy work camera and took a couple shots and videos - will post them tomorrow. Right across the street from a similar attic fire in February of 2006.

The term "Disparate Impact" essentially means that one particular demographic that is protected against discrimination by law (age, race, gender, religion, etc.) is negatively affected by some sort of hiring procedure, whether intentional or not. That term is mostly broadly drawn. But keep in mind that labor laws have an out for employers, something called "legitimate business reasons". Basically an employer has to prove that by hiring a particular protected class, the business would lose money (or in the case of a Fire Department, life and property). For example, a guy sued Hooters for not being hired as a server. I'm sure he had fantastic manboobs, but Hooters won the case because they proved they could not make as much money with a guy in a skimpy wifebeater vs. a woman. Nonsense, but this is the world we live in today.

Saw the plume on my way home from work, found out the address, and dumped the car on a sidestreet to take a couple of pics from my phone. Great job by everyone who responded. Very heavy fire and smoke condition. I saw units from Eastchester, Scarsdale, and Mamaroneck operating or relocated. Anyone count the alarms? I heard about 5. I still smell like burning Indian food...

It appears that all YFD stations have that sign out front.

Never heard of Holzberg, but for cross-band operations, check out the Vertex Standard VX-920. http://www.vertexsta...64&isArchived=0 My latest radio is a Vertex VX-900, and it's a sturdy, dependable, and relatively inexpensive radio. Motorola's got a decent competitor. NYPD is having some success switching over to Vertex. Transmitting on both VHF and UHF in the same radio is somewhat of an electronic challenge. Even the antenna needs to be able to receive and transmit on both bands.

Cool. It's a pretty good radio, is it in digital mode? Most scanning features are factory programmed and are a pain to figure out.

Keep us posted. I was going to try to do the same and hook it to my Spectra. The Centracoms were workhorses for many departments, including the FDNY, for many years. Unfortunately for us Ebayers, you need racks of special electronics, cables, and power supplies to actually get one to work. Interestingly enough, NYPD in its new state-of-the-art Metrotech area will still be using a version of this console.
