  1. Chief, how do you do it Rockland? What is your company staffing? Thanks in advance.
  2. That's a GREAT deal. Is that the one year intro price chief?
  3. We had daily apparatus reports that included everything, even counting the hose-straps. Sometimes it felt silly, but for an apparatus operator, there is no better way to memorize and stay refreshed as to what and where everything is on the rig. Daily reports should include checking the SCBAs, turning them on, checking the PASS alarms, the booster tank level, changing the portable batteries, putting the rig in pump, inventory all the equipment, run and top off or charge all power tools, check the fluids in same. Truckies should get the stick up, daily, even/odd days, weekly, at some regular intervals. Weekly reports should include checking ALL lighting; down to the turn signals & brake lights, fluids in the motor, the tire pressures, condition of the belts, radio checks with dispatch (including portables), and bleeding the air-brakes. It comes down to detail. You can put it all too paper and provide the guidelines, but it's still up to the conciencious firefighter to do the extras; like checking the tension on a saw blade and making sure it is ready to go. Cleaning the gauges in the dashboard and on the pump should be done regularly, but not neccesarily put on a check sheet. Edit: Can't forget to put the Hurst tool in MPO, or start the portable motor, fuel it, and charge the hydra-lines and make sure the individual tools are functioning properly.
  4. What are Cablevision, FIOS, Direct TV charging in NY these days? I have Comcast in Fl. I'm looking at the bill; HD Premier Bundle: Triple Play, digital premier, HBO, Starz, Cinemax, Showtime, Sports package, VOD, High speed internet, digital voice unlimited: $199.99 Sureprice2= -40.00 $159.99 Taxes, fees, etc +24.07 =$184.06 per month
  5. Very interesting video, thanks for bringing it forward NY10570. I wish the camera had stayed at the back step, because I would have liked to have seen what the members did next, after stretching the initial 1 3/4" (or is it a 2 1/2") attack line into the fire structure. Question for our FDNY members; would the next handline have come off the first due engine, or the second? It looked like a couple of companies were at the back step of the first due. Question for all our members; If you were the officer in charge at this point in the attack, where would you order the SECOND handline be deployed? To back-up the first, into the D exposure now involved in fire, IFO the alleyway to knock down the fire in between the structures, or someplace else? Remember you have a truck company inside the fire structure. Where is your next truck company going to go? What else do you need to think of? Let's hear some tactics!
  6. Millions of viewers will miss the Oscars if the dispute isn't resolved. .....Well, at least one good thing came of this. You can catch up on some needed sleep instead of wasting your time watching self-absorbed famous people congratulate one another.... http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/abc-cablevision-dispute-means-millions-might-miss-oscar-broadcast/19386565
  7. Totally agree. Remember when the Dolans screwed all the Bronx and blacked out Yankees games over the fight about the new YES Network?
  8. Nice photos Dave, thanks for sharing them.
  9. I see that Captain Toth of IFR has joined us on EMTBravo. Welcome Cap! I hope the other brothers from your department will join us as well.
  10. Quite accurate. I was told IFR has a PPC rating of 4; working hard on improving it to 3.
  11. Just a couple more........it really was fun doing this little project. I have a new found respect for all the fire photographers, and apparatus photographers out there. I gave the website addy to the Islamorada guys; if they read this, why not become members of this website? We're chock full of useless knowledge and then some. Thanks again!
  12. Hi Mike, Long time no see, how's the injury feeling? Hopefully better. Regarding the standards for hiring or transfer; I've only "heard" (cannot say with any certainty) that Florida does not accept National FF1-2 Certification for hiring standards. They have their own. With regard to responding they do fill multiple functions; Paramedic on a Rescue for one alarm, and responding in a fire truck the next. Different than NY no doubt. I haven't ever seen any, but it's my understanding some municipalities have firefighter/cops. Ever heard of that one? Apparently they are having trouble with volunteer recruitment and retention; that much is like everywhere else I guess. Volunteering in Fl. is down. As far as the piercing nozzle, I was thinking about a commercial occupancy with a cockloft fire as being a good example where this could be effective. If you have to pierce the cinder-block to get access, then pump it full of foam....could be effective. It's kind of a high rent district, so the trailer parks are limited to places that cater to the PREVOST crowd. A retired Albany cop I know stays close to here in his RV which he owns outright. It's a good thing though, because the "hook-up" is $2,100 a month. That's to park, have water, electric and cable. Anybody that tells ya Florida is cheaper to live; ain't been here in a while lol.
  13. Josh, Do you have any info on the drive train; motor make & horsepower, and is this tanker going to be automatic transmission or standard shift? Thanks, George
  14. For all you Bus Buffs.....Nice grill, nice cab.
  15. Piercing nozzle; can be effective in an area like this with much of the construction cinder-block, ordinary, Type III. Either that or it's a heat-seaking missle. NOTE: Been facinated much of today with Google Picasa 3. Needed resizing for these images, and this download blew me away with it's ease and performance with the Windows 7 operating system. Great app for your photos!
  16. The OV! Another great place is The Whistle Stop. Locals' joint.
  17. As posted, about 2,500 runs in 2009; 80% EMS.
  18. Exactly. While visiting Station 21, they received an EMS run and both members responded on the Rescue. The other rigs will relocate accordingly to maintain coverage.
  19. Here ya' go partner. http://www.drysdales.com/
  20. Regarding your comments about the technical terminology of the OSHA Standard, and your legal interpretation of same; you are putting forth one of the most regressive arguements I've seen in quite some time. Are you quite sure that your legal knowledge is correct? You seem to have left out a few very key words in your deconstruction of the Standard; "provide EFFECTIVE EMERGENCY RESCUE." Do you understand how much weight those simple four words legally carry? I'll tell you who does, FEMA for starters. They granted millions of dollars in AFG awards based on the proper application of the Standard you quoted. I've alluded to the fact that my job was a recipient of said AFG award. I will tell you, in the narrative, the term RIT or RIC (Rapid Intervention Crew is one which consists of fewer than four members) was used numerous times in justifying our need to be able to effectively perform the intent of 1910.134. FEMA agreed. I'm sure PESH would agree. I'm sure a judge would agree. Many in the fire service have fought extremely hard to make this Standard just that; a Standard. Please don't start telling all these members that there really is no "technical" requirement for FAST or RIT. To all the younger guys that interpret your comments that there are technicalities, and ways to wiggle around with 1910.134, follow the progressive line of thought here fellas. FAST/RIT is one of the best improvements we have been able to establish in our lifetimes regarding firefighter safety. An IC that disregards the INTENT of the Standard, and trust me an attorney would be better able to explain the ramifications of the Standard in a lawsuit against a negligent IC; exposes him/herself to major liability. Aside from the catastrophy that might occur. Stay progressive in your thoughts and actions out there guys. Please, for your own safety. Edit: for unnecessary harshness.
  21. Thanks. I thought it stood for "Cancel The Squad."
  22. (insert comment here).....
  23. Get ready. It sounds like this could be one doozy of a storm, packing 70 mph winds, and blizard conditons. Is your department making plans for stand-bys? Are you readying your equipment, calling in manpower, making sure you have everything you need? http://www.accuweather.com/regional-news-story.asp?region=eastusnews
