  5. Now what do we have here? Is it a bartender with an ax to grind.......maybe he got a speeding ticket.....maybe a dui....maybe he listens to too much talk radio....maybe he reads the post......maybe he knows guys from his generation who became cops or firemen who are now retired while he's gotta keep standing behind that bar......maybe his "retirement plan and benefits" from the bar in question doesn't quite stack up with "his buddies" who were cops or firemen.....maybe his wife ran off with a sanitation worker.....ah who cares.....there are two things that you can always find just a little further down the road; one's another saloon....but jeez....I forget what the other thing is.....
  6. I do not believe the image in question is from the department patch. Rather an air-brushed company logo on one rig. It depicts a skull with a helmet on with the number 3 on the shield. The skull has a stars and bars bandanna around it's neck. The logo states "Buckle Up" underneath it. The department patch features crossed American and New York State flags. I'm sure the Elmont, N.Y. forefathers who fought in the Civil War, would vote to remove a symbol of the Confederacy from their fire apparatus, were their voices able to be heard.

  8. In it's day, this was probably the most common "independent" and OTR Fleet.
  9. They're called "cab-overs". I don't know if you've ever listened to "Car Talk" on NPR, but I found a funny thread about whatever became of the cab-over: http://action.publicbroadcasting.net/cartalk/posts/list/2146445.page Lots of opinions, but safety gets my vote. The White Freightliner is the one I remember being most common on the Interstates. International Harvester had a distinctive retro/deco flair to the style of it's cab-over.....
  10. Is this the "new SAFER"? If so, a majority of the funding will be in place for three years.
  11. Okay, but we also have the "no-pushing" rule now. No matter what forum you are in you cannot physically shove anybody......define: humor.
  12. I am not affiliated with the site management, only a member. I do not offer any new member guidance officially. My advice for you to introduce yourself in a previous post was; "sarcasm" which you have already defined and demonstrated. It's not too late to introduce yourself, but it might get in the way of your agenda.
  13. Hubris: [hyoo-bris, hoo-] –noun excessive pride or self-confidence; arrogance.
  14. It is a grim reality that an entire generation of front line first responders, firefighters, cops and ems members all, will have to continually come back to this, and be on the alert for possible illness for quite some time to come. Reflecting on the disgraceful drama the Congress created with the politicization of the Zadroga Bill, really makes me shake my head in disgust. The fact that a man like Firefighter Bill Quick, may he rest in peace, may have had to endure the additional stress of uncertainty, during the difficult and tragic last months of his life, with twin teenagers and a wife to worry about, because of the actions or lack thereof on the part of politicians in Washington is sickening. I truly hope, if there is one person of conscience in the Congress, they put up a big color portrait of Firefighter Quick, the Daily News photo will do quite well, and display it in the Rotunda with an American flag and a Maltese Cross for every last one of those politicians to have to walk past every day for the rest of 2011. Condolences to Firefighter Quick's family, friends and Brothers.

  16. Bear with me for a moment; A while back, I put up a request on the board for any gear or equipment that could possibly be donated to a rural fire department in Maine. My mother's cabin is in the town, and I had contacted the COD on a different matter, but the discussion evolved to the needs of the department. They don't HAVE enough turnout gear for their members. Maybe the Chief from Rockland, antiquefirelt could expand on the lack of funding for the fire service up there...... Initially, the idea was greeted with much enthusiasm from more than a few members. As I tried to pursue the idea of following through, one member actually grew hostile in his e-mail responses, like "I'm so busy, why are you bothering me..." Aside from maybe one member the request for donations turned into an utter bomb with members dropping the ball. I was not going to mention this until now in this discussion, I just began wondering....something is definitely not right here, aside from the horror show of 14 seconds of video. I think maybe we should be careful to rush judgement, but now that this is out on the blogs and boards, the fire service deserves to know the facts. But I relayed the information about the gear for Maine thing because.....maybe this department lacks turnout gear. You may laugh, but it's a 2011 reality in the fire service that there are places that lack basic turnout gear. Of course, chances are these are some type of members of a department were seeing, they might have all the latest and greatest gear.....back on a rack at the firehouse, or folded neatly in a compartment. These stills from a newspaper tell more of the story: http://www.uvaldeleadernews.com/news/article_69171608-1c40-11e0-b79e-001cc4c03286.html?mode=image I would say hold off judging until we know for sure, and we deserve to know, there's nothing wrong with asking the question, "what the hell is going on here?" It could be taken as a mockery of our profession, career or volunteer. There should be a groundswell of anger in the fire service at incidents like these if justified, because everything guys fight so hard for in this business...guys died and safety improvements came from their deaths....do we disregard those lives given to the service...do we disrespect the profession so severely....I was actually thinking earlier a good soundtrack for this video would be 14 seconds of a ringing cuckoo clock. But one thing I want to do is give credit to the Brother working on the roof properly. Like it ain't hard enough, and you have added chaos from the personnel around you....
  17. Actually, and I'm not saying this to be a b-buster; I heard it's from Texas.
  18. This video is getting around the different blogs, but nobody seems to know much about the who, what, where. It looks like a minimally staffed FD (the one ff in gear), and these other people could be civilians....maybe more info will come out about it.
  19. That might have been fuzzily put....apologies I meant asking for grant money for a new K9 and the time for the officer to train with his new partner, as in the request for the 10-13...or did I read it wrong too...
  20. I admire your commitment to help out. This might not be a question specifically for you....just wondering if WFPD had checked to see if there is any grant money available to help.....imo they might even go so far as to inquire with the county if it's a service provided over jurisdictional lines.....Chris would know...sucks the K9 is really sick. I know a K9 guy from Harrison, he and his partner are quite the team. Best of luck with the fundraiser.
  21. JBE if your Bureau gets more information on the Service, would you mind posting it up? ~Thank you
  22. Oh he was kiddin'? I should have picked up on the A2A title....it really is Marx Brothers.....I like it.
  23. Hey, welcome to the boards there guy. Don't be shy with your opinions, be sure and jump right in there.......... If you're interested, there's also an "Introduction" thread....
