Okay cool.

The e-mail link for the quote of the week doesn't work. So I'm nominating Chief Raftery for the following:
-
It's a sign of character when a man can readily admit his mistakes. Anybody ever tell you, you look like Steve McQueen?
-
Was this a training evolution? PS: For $25 you could make a few hundred just getting it over to the junkyard.
-
Let he who is without wit be the first to not get it.

Goood eye!

Roger that. But the thing about it is I think many members are interpreting such rules to mean they shouldn't be writing about firefighting period. Even if the department enacts this type of policy, as long as you don't make representations that you're speaking for the department, and to play it even safer you simply stay away from mentioning your department in any way; "my department does it this way" type comments, nobody can tell you that you can't write your opinion about, say a particular fireground evolution, the usefulness of the Bangor Ladder, or whether the Detroit Door Opener worked better than a hydra-ram. I think the policies coming out are having a temporary chilling effect on some peoples' posting habits. But the best way to address that imo, is to get it out in the open and let guys hear that policy or no policy, it doesn't mean suddenly guys have to give up posting. Be careful about what and how you say it yes, but quit posting? Hell no. It's better to talk about it I think, than to just have the rumors out there, the uncertainty.

I've read the Standard Captain, and know the wording is "Two Out." Correcto.

If we observe and for the sake of this discussion only we assume the following to have been the complete and timely reporting of a structure fire for the VMFD, this is a great example to look at in more depth: At 05:41 hours there is something burning in this basement which results in 4 engines, a truck and three commanders responding to and taking action toward @05:47 hours confirmed smoke from the basement. Two minutes later a commander transmits a 10-75 and requests TMFD FAST. @05:58 hours we see a Rescue responding "w/FAST." A minute later a commander transmits for the FAST unit to locate at the scene, and finally @06:03 the designated FAST unit is on scene. From 05:41 hours with an IDLH occurring at the location in the basement, twenty-two minutes later the FAST in on scene. In those 22 minutes, this fire was confirmed and obviously attacked because we have a command request at 05:55 hours for Con Ed for an electrical fire. What I see missing from this real fire scenario, (and congratulations to the VMFD for obviously a successful stop) is a continuous, designated company from the home department that assumed and performed the necessary functions of a FAST Team. So my question would be, why is the FAST unit from the Town, 22 minutes later? What good would that have done in those critical initial attack moments when FAST is supposed to be appropriately in place as required by the OSHA Standard 1910.134 or the NFPA 1720 (volunteer standard) or NFPA 1710 (career standard applying because the TMFD is combo)? The designated FAST company could have been engine 38, 39, 40, 41 or truck 20, and this assignment would have been continuous would it not? There should be no need for a "replacement FAST unit" 22 minutes later. I'm missing what that accomplishes regarding compliance with the Statute, but more importantly the immediate and continuous protection that should have been afforded the initial attack members who proceeded down into this burning basement. Regardless if a commander from this job is going to possibly come back now and answer that there was a designated home company performing FAST until the arrival of the Town's Rescue, it doesn't make sense to transfer the function. Whatever home company was the initial FAST, they were the eyes from the beginning. They were locating secondary means of egress and assuring that was made available to interior units. They threw the ground ladders, stretched the FAST hoseline. I hope the members of the VMFD will not take offense to the observations I have made here, and once again this was a real situation, but I'm not attempting to say the I.A. information is totally accurate; it's only for the sake of this discussion that I would conclude there to have been either an unnecessary delay in implementing the FAST, or an unnecessary transfer of function. Again, I obviously wasn't there, don't know the intensity of the fire the Village faced at this job, it just so happens to be perfect timing to fit into the hypothetical for this discussion. Most sincerely am not trying to step on anyone's toes or MMQB their fire.

Here's hoping the Benefit is a huge success, a great Remembrance, and continued healing for the Joyce family from the Yonkers Fire Family that takes care of them now. God Bless.

Willy, I thought you were coming down here and Dan P was gonna watch the cats

Great point about having a trade skill Bro.

Hi John, There are others on the board here who will be able to help you much more than I with specifics regarding your questions. But reading into your post I just wanted to share an observation if I might; it's great to read how much your heart and head is totally into firefighting, and how you are chomping at the bit for things to move a little quicker, for the functions you want to be involved with today, not tomorrow. You have absolutely nothing to be apologetic about; your desire to grow faster into that position, to gain that responsibility is honorable and refreshing. You're building an impressive resume and skill-set, and if you maintain that fire in your heart, that obvious passion, you're going to be one hell of a firefighter. The fire-science degree will be a major advantage for you; gaining a firefighting career is extremely competitive, and you'll be in familiar territory in future testing and promotion scenarios. Your post is great, I'm sure many of the members will read it and remember how they felt "coming up." Thanks for sharing that eagerness and passion for the fire service with us. Wishing you the best of success in your en devours....

NO WAY!? That was like......a landmark....now what am I gonna look at in Georgia (don't answer that).

Have to say I'm glad you put "most" in your answer Capt. I specifically remember one year in my former district where nearly 5,000 voters turned out for a Commissioners Election, and a Referendum item.

Okay BIG BONE to pick. Eli, freakin' awesome camera, and great shots. BUT, fellas, he gets THREE REPS for TWO Toyota Prius's, one with a dent in the door? What is this site coming too? LOL Kidding aside, I know you travel far to get these shots, and most of us appreciate them very much, so thank you Eli.

For your very first post here maybe you should have introduced yourself, and given us an idea of your education. I'll go out on a limb and guess "multi-culturalism" is/was a big part of your college experience. And let me ask you one question; were you 8, 9 or 10 on 9/11/2001? Welcome to the boards.

On a lighter note; DO NOT SPEED THROUGH GEORGIA. You just might end up working for a fire department...for free.

I appreciate what you are saying, and my intent with this comment is not to make this thread go off topic. I don't think she would mind now if I said I dated a female police officer from southern Westchester for quite some time. The insight I got into the professional operation of a particularly small police department made me wonder why they were able to maintain such a high level of professionalism, and LOYALTY toward each other; when I've seen fire departments in southern Westchester destroying themselves with infighting, ridiculous hatred and grudge-holding, and overall dysfunction. This does not apply to the larger jobs like Yonkers IMHO. I had opportunity to advise a Brother to transfer to YFD years ago from another department. My advice was GO and don't look back. I think he thinks he made the right choice. Guys have to raise their game in the fire service. Forgiveness is a virtue; one that too many firefighters, career or volunteer don't seem to understand. We all make mistakes, but the higher virtue of Brotherhood could prevail, IF the Brothers could learn to forgive, let it go, understand we're all human and ALL of us are going to do something that pisses others off. Thank you for the opportunity to address this particularly nagging issue in Westchester County Fire Departments. We now return you to the regularly scheduled discussion of an amazing fire; amazing because it shows what firefighters are capable of doing as a team. More of us need to keep that in focus during the times when tankers and buildings aren't burning.

Chief I think they celebrate "Quakers Day" in Rhode Island.

News travels a bit slow down here. Watching college football on Saturday, who would have known this was taking place offshore; (LTNRFD this is where "Copi" lives) Quite amazing anybody survived. But the water is still warm thank goodness for these people. http://www.aol.com/2011/10/09/florida-boaters-rescued-7_n_1002748.html
