  1. With the News 12 report of HQ being condemned and vacated as per the City Engineer as of 0800 this morning. Can anyone shed light as to where the companies were relocated?
  2. I recently met the cousin of FF Galasso at my Department's Annual Memorial Service in May, whereas FF Galasso was also a Member of the West Harrison FD. She shared this story with me prior to our Services. I was taken aback by her story and the unfortunate situation surrounding his death. Great post, Thank You
  3. As I complete my second full year as Chief of the West Harrison FD. This program is probably my proudest achievement. To see these men work and the interest they take in my Department and the fire service is second to none. This is the future of this Department, and the future for this community. I wholeheartedly commend my Program Coordinators/ Advisors, for the time and effort you put into this program and Thank my Junior Members for being there... Nice Job, boys!!
  4. To put an end to this before it spirals out of control. specs were submitted to our Town Purchasing for advertisement purposes. The Department is looking to replace Rescue 35 with a "Rescue" type Engine. Rescue 35 - RIP!!! ENGINE 266 will be responding!!!!
  5. MY Department will be hosting a parade on Sunday, September 25th, 2011 to celebrate our 100th Anniversary of service to the residents of Harrison. The parade will begin at 1pm at Locust and Columbus Avenues. Upon completion of the parade past my FD @(95 Lake St) we will sponsor a BBQ in Passadomo Park. All are invited!!!
  6. To those interested, the apparatus was indeed Rescue 35. Which is a 2005 KME Rescue /Engine. My THANKS to all that responded from Nyack and Valley Cottage to contain the fire to the point of origin. Unknown how the fire started,outside of it appeared to originate in the engine compartment. The apparatus was being road tested by a mechanic from Ruscon. Truly won't know all the damage until the Rescue returns to KME. Steve Mancini Chief West Harrison FD

Had my Dept ( West Harrison) utilize Fire 19 for yesterday at the rquest of 60 Control; Never recieved a "busy" signal" during the height of the storm with tremendous call load being generated throughout the County. It truly proved it's viability yesterday. BTW, Excellent job to those staffing the Radio !!
  8. I too agree with biifitz, my Department has recently begun running Automatic Mutual Aid with a neighbor, and for those calls MY department utilizes the assigned TRUNKED channel. I find the TRUNK to be much clearer and obviously alot less "frustrating" than 46.26. I truly will have to seriously consider switching permanately.

  11. A little confused, so any help is appreciated. Attending a WEEKDAY - DAYGAME with the family and could board in either Harrison or White Plains. Looking at the attached schedules nothing addresses WEEKDAY games ?? Thanks
  12. West Harrison still utilizes a whistle / horn for all calls 24 hours a day.
  13. Andy, In West Harrison we imply the following requirements, 2nd Lt.- Firefighter 1, Survival, EVOC, App. Pump Op, Intro to Fire Officer 1st Lt. - In addition to the above, Ladder Co. Ops, AVET, Captain - Fire Officer 1, Haz-Mat Awareness Asst. Chief - Fire Behavior and Arson Awareness, Principles for Fire Inv. I hope this helps!

  15. R1, truly AMAZING !! I remember reading Dennis Smith's book for the first time around 1979 and being captivated then by the work that was performed in the early 70's! I can't wait for the BX audio. By any chance would anyone know if there any Video from that period out there. I've seen various places offer "War Year" footage but I can't recall any that early?
  16. Remember it well,he fire was in the residence of Bill Fugazy the name of the street slips my mind, but I believe it bordered the Country Club. We were toned out with Purchase for an Engine each to the scene. Upon arrival, Harrison was actually looking for our Tower Ladder to set up in the rear with I believe either Rye or the Village. We initially stood FAST, then went to work attempting to push a line into the top floor before an evacuation was blown. I'm sure HFD750 remebers alot more.
  17. Without a doubt, LEATHER boots are the way to go. I have only a few members not outfitted into them from the Rubber Rangers. We tried a few makes Warrington, and a Italian make can't remember the brand? But settled on the Warringtons. Like ALS stated watch the toes, I wore out my toes in (5) years crawling around the FTC. My new guys are going to get the Warrington 5000 which provide the toe cover and are easier to get into with a wider calf. Helmets all members are provided with a 1010 with ESS goggles, Chiefs are modeling 1044's which seem to be somewhat lighter, and probably what we'll eventually switch into.
  18. These were my thoughts, last week with my post. With the amount of training Dept's are stressing these days and the overall attitude towards requests for Fast and creations of them from within. Why aren't ALL Dept's falling into line, regarding FAST? Whether it come from a neighbor upon initial response, or from within if the Dept is able to ! Nobody wants the unexpected to occur, so why not attempt to be (1) step ahead.
  19. I know there have been multiple discussions in the past regarding FAST Operations and the NFPA's "definition' of FAST deployment, but my question is this. What Departments actually have response plans devised that upon going to work, a FASTeam is on the way? Obviously I'm throwing this out to the smaller Dept's and even some Combo Dept's that have a problem with volunteer response.
  20. West Harrison has (2) operating Command Vehicles in service, ( 2501, 2502). We have (1) spare and (1) Utility Car (U-27). The latter two are to be auctioned off in the near future.

  22. Our training facility was officially dedicated today, but not officially "christened" yet!! The building does sit on Town property located on Park Lane. This property was used by the government years ago guring the Cold War Era. The property to my understanding did contain actual NIKE missiles. Upon removal of said missiles, the government willed the Fire Department the land for training purposes. The property was used by the Police ( Outdoor Range) as well as Towns' FD's (West Harrison, Harrison, and Purchase). the FD"s had a 1 story block building that lord knows seen it share of FIRE!! In 1997 or so the building became inoperable for safety reasons and was razed. With the development of the "woods" around the Nike base into million dollar homes, a need for new and improved water towers were developed on the property to serve the new populace of this section of our district, with talk of turning the remainder of the property into a recreation facility, an ex-chief "pestered" the town (thanks, Jerry!) into not forgetting the Fire Dept. and constantly reminding officials OF who was actually deeded the property. the Nike Base became a hot topic between the Town of Harrison and my Department, BUT in the long run a "happy" median was met with the West Harrison Fire Department receiving approximately 5 acres of land on the NIKE Base. The Police Dept. received property for their Outdoor range as well as trailers for personnel, and at this time the remaining property belongs to the DPW for a variety of functions. As stated, our building sits towards the back of the property and contains a 3 1/2 story training facility. The building does contain a "burn" room on the ground floor, and (2) roof simulators. There is a stand-pipe run for to simulate "commercial" and multiple rooms to conduct search and FAST drills. There is currently a concrete pad to perfrom vehicle work ( extrication / burn ) as well as (2) functioning hydrants. We our currently exploring upgrades in the next year that would include an additional burn room on the upper floors, as well as "movable" walls. All in all, alot of hard work was entered into the entire project by a number of people and for that I say thanks boys!!!
  23. Two parts to this question. Are there any departments that require their Line Officers to have this, and does anyone know if the FTC has anymore more planned besides July 15.

  25. We task our 1st Lt with this responsibility. We have an in-house form that is filled out after every alarm, and then a few times a month he enters them in NFIRS.
