Heat appears to be a factor in Vassar incidents

About 10 people collapsed Saturday during a cross-country race held at Vassar College.

"It was a day of extremely warm conditions, with kids running their hearts out," said Vassar Sports Information Director Robin Deutsch.

Six of the runners were taken to Vassar Brothers Medical Center, he said.

"Most were given water and were rehydrated," Deutsch said. Some received intravenous fluids, he said, and some were iced down.

The event was an 5K run for women and an 8K run for men. Some schools that participated were SUNY New Paltz, Bard College and New York University.,

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, temperatures in Poughkeepsie today were in the mid- to upper-80s with 49 percent humidity. The heat index was 96 degrees.
