BRIDGEPORT — Two people were injured — one critically — when a fire engine and car collided downtown this afternoon.

The crash took place as the Rescue 5 truck left fire headquarters on lower Congress Street and turned onto Housatonic Avenue, colliding with a car about 4 p.m.

The accident caused heavy damage to the driver's side of the car, and the female driver had to extricated from the wreckage. The driver is said to be in critical condition at St. Vincent's Medical Center.

Several other people, including firefighters, apparently required some medical attention as well.

No other details were immediately available.

Fire truck kills elderly woman in Bridgeport

(07/31/07) BRIDGEPORT - A Bridgeport fire truck crashed into another vehicle Tuesday, killing an elderly woman.

The fire truck, Ladder 5, was responding to an emergency call when it hit the woman's car at the intersection of Congress Street and Housatonic Avenue, police said. Mayor John Fabrizi said the victim, whose identity has not yet been released, either did not see or realize the truck was coming. Ladder 5's emergency lights and sirens were on, however, and other cars had stopped at the intersection to let it pass.

The woman was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Vincent Medical Center around 6:30 p.m. Five others, including four firefighters, were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

One witness said the victim might not have been wearing her seatbelt.
