5 posts in this topic

Seeing as this information was released by EFPD and was on public news, here is more additional information that is a matter of public record.

2 17 y/o patients were traveling in a Chevy S-10 that lost control, and struck a tree on the passenger's door. The cab of the truck was separated from the frame, and was off-set to the bed of the truck by a good 3-4 feet. Upon arrival, it was confirmed one patient (passenger) pinned and unconscious. The vehicle was stabilized, and the roof was removed hastily to extricate the passenger.

The passenger's name and age were also released, but due to sensitivity, I am not repeating.

Both the driver and the passenger were transported to Saint Francis Hospital, but unfortunately, the passenger did not make it.

Incident Alert

Driver in fatal crash still hospitalized

East Fishkill teen killed in accident

By Rasheed Oluwa

Poughkeepsie Journal

HOPEWELL JUNCTION - The 17-year-old driver in a fatal crash Monday remains hospitalized this morning, East Fishkill Town Police said.

Gary Frank of East Fishkill is still admitted this morning to Saint Francis Hospital after the pickup truck he drove crashed into a tree Monday afternoon. He is in critical, but stable condition, according to hospital spokesman Larry Hughes.

Frank was headed south on Lake Walton Road, near the intersection with Cambridge Court, at about 12:23 p.m. when the incident occurred.

Passenger Adam Kaplan, 16, of East Fishkill, was killed as a result of the accident, police said.

The exact cause of the car crash is under investigation, police Sgt. Kevin Keefe said.

“When we tried to talk to him, he was conscious but not alert. He couldn’t answer the basic questions such as where he was coming from or going,” Keefe said.

Adam Kaplan was killed while riding in the passenger side of pickup truck headed south on Lake Walton Road, near the intersection with Cambridge Court, police said. At about 12:23 p.m., police responded to a call for a vehicle that had smashed into a tree on the passenger side.

Frank was able to remove himself from the vehicle, according to East Fishkill town police. The driver had suffered head injuries and was unable to immediately recall the details leading up to the accident, police said.

Members of East Fishkill Fire and Rescue came to the crash scene and extricated Kaplan from the vehicle. Both teenagers were transported to Saint Francis Hospital in the Town of Poughkeepsie.

Although the cause of the accident was uncertain Monday, police believe speed and slippery road conditions caused by Monday's rainfall may have contributed.

James Rogowski coached Kaplan in East Fishkill's Little League baseball program when he was 10. That team won the league championship in 2001. Adam's father, Andy Kaplan, also coached on that team.

Rogowski recalled a party he attended at the Kaplans' home to celebrate the team's season success. The backyard had a miniature baseball diamond that was set up for practice.

"There was a dirt path that was all worn in from third base to home plate and you could just tell they played baseball on a regular basis," Rogowski said. "He was one of the power hitters on the team that year. Every time I bumped into him after that, he was always friendly and he always said 'hello.' "

Monday's accident was the third fatal crash in Dutchess County this month. On July 13, 19-year-old Melinda Mesuda of Hyde Park died in a crash on Route 55 in the Town of LaGrange. Steve Kearins, 20, of Millbrook, died during a crash on Route 343 in the Town of Washington.

East Fishkill police ask anyone who may have witnessed Monday's crash to contact them at 845-221-2111.
