Paving To Reduce Saw Mill Parkway Flooding Set To Start

13 posts in this topic

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) will carry out a fall paving project designed to reduce the frequency of flooding on the Saw Mill River Parkway southbound in Pleasantville, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday, Oct. 3..... It will raise the road bed approximately 3 inches and pave the Marble Avenue exit ramp off the Parkway.

They tried this already!

Over time, the roadways elevation drops and makes it susceptible to flooding

So they are going to just keep paving over it instead of going for a more long-term solution? This state sure likes to squander money on band-Aid solutions instead of just paying to do it right the first time.

They pave it enough times it will become a viaduct.

the problem the state has is with the ecogololists and army corp of engineers they will not let dot dig a new channel back away from the road so they keep raising it the saw mill goes into an S turn right there and when it rains real hard the water canot make the turn so it crashes up on to the road way we will see how long this last before the next flood detour signs go up tommorrow and project starts this week

They keep raising the parkway and it keeps sinking. The material under the parkway can't handle the weight in that area. The water will always win. Pilings need to be driven into the ground for a causeway so the water can stay under the parkway. The State will never go for it because it is expensive.

That's not the only road in the area that needs work. The infrastructure around here is old.

How about a causeway where the water can overflow under it and not cause anf roadway flooding?

Never happen, it makes sense, costs money and would involve too many committees and special interest groups to get it off the ground. (pun intended).

what most people don't understand or realize, back in the day parkways were created to flood as to keep the water away from homes. problem is it wasnt meant for the amount of travel or demand that it is used for today or the weather we have been getting the past few years

I agree with the notion that it's just going to sink even more the more times they pave to raise it.

What about getting the US Army Corps of Engineers involved, like they did in Ardsley and Yonkers to mitigate the issue on the Saw Mill? They built large walls and created channels in the flood zones that created the most problems.

Also, what about some sort of levee system, or flood channel? Or maybe just cleaning debris downstream?

I know the whole parkway needs a major overhaul especially from the Taconic split north to I-684,, but I don't think that's going to ever happen. At least make some repairs that help avoid major traffic disruptions.
